THE SCOTTISH AND NORTH IRISH YEOMANRY

The Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry is a light reconnaissance regiment. Our regimental headquarters is at Redford Barracks in Edinburgh. We have Squadrons in Ayr, Belfast, Cupar, and Edinburgh, together with Troop locations in Aberdeen and Coleraine. Although the current regiment formed as recently as 31 October 2014, each Squadron is the successor of a famous Yeomanry Regiment.

A (Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick’s Own) Yeomanry) Squadron is the senior Squadron. The Ayrshire Yeomanry have served continuously for over 200 years, and were first raised in 1798.

B (North Irish Horse) Squadron formed as The North of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry in 1902  and in 1908 transferred to the Special Reserve as the North Irish Horse. Placed into suspended animation during the inter-war years, the North Irish Horse was reconstituted in 1939.

C (Fife & Forfar Yeomanry / Scottish Horse) Squadron represents two former regiments which amalgamated in 1956, namely the Fife & Forfar Yeomanry and the Scottish Horse. The latter were originally raised in South Africa by Lord Tullibardine, later Duke of Atholl.
E (Lothians & Border Yeomanry) Squadron preserves the traditions of the Lothians & Border Horse Yeomanry. After service in the Boer War and both World Wars, the Lothians & Border Horse eventually became a Squadron of The Scottish Yeomanry and were disbanded along with that Regiment in 1998.

HQ (Lovat Scouts) Squadron preserves the traditions of The Lovat Scouts. Initially raised in the Highlands for the Boer War, the Lovat Scouts also served in both World Wars. After WW2 the Lovat Scouts were reorganised, first as a Regiment of Artillery and later as two companies of the 51st Highland Volunteers, and then as HQ Squadron SNIY.
